RFL Day 2 – Report from the Floor

Wednesday, March 18th, 2009

Some of the frenetic first blush has passed, and the issues with lag are being addressed as quickly as possible as the organizers struggle to get the kinks out of what might be the Grid’s Largest Mall.

Lots of people are blogging about the clothes, but today I want to talk about the shops themselves. The builders did a great job of creating just the right touch of variety and uniformity to create the backdrop in front of which our little passion play can play out. There are about 5 or 6 basic shapes arranged on the paths and each merchant appears to have some leeway as to how they implement the Pirate theme.

The other day on my preview run, I noticed this cute little diorama in the middle of a shop.

Couture by Cat

I really liked the way Couture by Cat used the ship’s ribs as part of the side wall. It was the first time I really noticed how far the merchants were getting into the decorating.

Today I got a little tired as I wandered the venue so I grabbed a quick nap in this handy store-mounted hammock in Devilish Cupcake’s shop.

Yes, those are the same red parachute shorts from Barefoot Apparel. They’re low lag and fit perfectly in the beachy theme of the regions.

Refreshed I managed to stumble onward and around the corner I found On a Lark with their pirate themed extravaganza.

All these decorations are a lot of fun, but the merchants are also competing for a great prize package from SL-Newspaper.com which involves three months of sponsorship for advertising space to promote their products. Over the course of the week, staffers from SL-Newspaper.com will be wandering the sims and judging each shop based on a set of five criteria including how well the decor fits the theme and how attractive it is to shoppers.

This group has really gone all out to coordinate a wide variety of efforts so that everybody who participates can have a lot of fun in a good cause, and maybe win some valuable prizes along the way. From the Seven Deadly Sins Silent Auction, to the Photo Contest, to the Treasure Hunt — and I’m sure I’m forgetting stuff — kudos rightfully go to the Relay Raiders for a great “fleet action.”

I’m still looking for my photo-contest outfit. I haven’t found it yet, but maybe around the next bend …

RFL Day 1 – Report from the Floor

Oh.

My.

God.

I was wondering what I’d write about today, the grand opening day of the SL Clothing Fair 2009. I got there a few minutes after the official whistle blew at 10AM SLT and the place was already a mob scene. According to the conference organizers there were 310 people across the 9 regions within 15 minutes of opening.

What’s the story today?

This is the story.
map

Thank you to everybody who’s come in, who plans to come in, and who has donated so much time and effort to this.

It took me over 2 hours just to shop through ONE of the islands. I don’t know if things will lighten up or not as night falls across Europe and spreads to North America, but there are some things you can do to help and to make your own experience less lag-tastic.

Unload your prims. Don’t wear jewelry, belts, or big honking boots. Keep your prim count low and you’ll slide through the crowd more easily.

Flexi. Don’t. Hair is a killer. Tails a no-no. Flexi gowns? Please, Maude, no.

Draw range. Pull it in to 64M and walk around.

It’s a beach, so wear a swimsuit, or simple clothes. There are a few people wandering around in black, white, or red (un-detailed) skin. No nips, no bits, no problems. This is a good place to bring out that Silver Surfer Avatar you’ve been hording.

Just leave the board home.

Shopping. Yes. Oh, my, yes. I’m broke but I’m getting more Lindens ASAP and I’m heading back!

Remember we’re having fun but fun with a purpose.

Together we can help find a cure.

UPDATE:

I’m finding some of the other bloggers out here that are also writin’ up a storm. I’ll add them as I run across them.

Here’s one from Maelynn Cattaneo from Look what the cat brought in: Please Just Act Smart

Here’s another from Kith Decuir at Pretty Little Things: Relay For Life: Shop and Donate! (I think I saw Kith at Sprawl earlier in the day today!)

SL Clothing Fair 2009

This is gonna be Big! Really Big.

Today at noon marked the official preview for the Relay For Life SL Clothing Fair 2009 and I hied my hiney to the islands to get my first official look at what might be the biggest event I’ve ever seen in SL. Nine islands. Eight dedicated to shopping! One that’s just for fun and set up so that the large scale events won’t keep the serious people from doing what they need to do. Shop!

Light House

I had to start by climbing to the top of the lighthouse just to see what I could see. I saw a ton!

Like Seven Deadly Sins!

7 Deadly Sins

Is it a coincidence that there are seven seas, and seven of SL’s top designers each contributing a unique gown to this terrific Seven Deadly Sins Silent Auction? I don’t think so. If I’m understanding this correctly, the gowns are unique and will be sold only at this auction. Just like that Scottish guy! There can be only one!

And that’s not all that’s happening over the course of the week!

There’s tons of shopping!

Shopping

How about some fashion shows?

Fashion Shows

Check. How about four of them in various times to accommodate different time zones around the globe.

And, of course, there’s shopping.

Shopping!

How about a photo contest?

Photo Contest

This is actually the second photo contest! You need to buy three things (at least) at the Fair and create a look around them. Keep good notes about where you got them in case you inspire somebody else to follow in your footprints. The details are on these signs and you can find them pretty much anywhere you teleport to. First prize is a PhotoLife Studio and there’s no entry fee so why not?

Then, did I mention the shopping?

Shopping!!

Oh, yea. I probably did.

Then there are the people. Walking around I found designers frantically putting the final touches on their shops, tidying up to get ready for the big opening tomorrow at 10am SLT. People like Kit Maitland of CKS Designs.

Kit Maitland - CKS Designs

Every shop is required to have at least one RFL vendor – the purple bordered ones. Take a look at the RFL vendors in that snap. And that’s not all of them that Kit had up in her shop. I asked if she had any message to pass to people and she said, “Just that everyone has done such marvelous job this year setting up the fair…and I hope people come out and enjoy all their hard work and really help us raise a lot of lindens for the ACS!!”

And around the corner I found this guy standing on a taxi.

DCNY Clothing CO - Dave Casanova

That’s Dave Casanova, CEO of DCNY Clothing Co and he was arranging for his models over the coming week. He’d climbed up there to test the poses on the cab and then forgot to step down before being buried by an IM avalanche.

And walking around I saw several of the organizers including Nevar Lobo who stood still while I took his picture.

Nevar Lobo

In spite of some last minute RL complications, he and the rest of the organizing committee was sweeping the area making sure that it would be ready for everybody to arrive on Monday.

And while this is going to be a lot of fun, let’s not forget that the cause is deadly serious.

Chapel

All the shopping, pirates, contests, and effort have gone toward joining us all together to raise money for the American Cancer Society. If you’re reading this, you’ve probably already lost somebody you love to cancer. In my case, it was my father. The American Cancer Society is one of the key agencies that’s helping to finance the elusive cure.

You are part of me

As you’re having fun this week, and you see one of those purple vendors? Remember.

You’re not just buying a dress, or a swim suit, or a piece of jewelry. You’re helping to save a life.

Oh, ya. This is gonna be BIG!
