A Question of Perspective

March 13th, 2010 by Roland

When you’re on the ground and looking at things close up, it’s often difficult to get a good grasp of the nature of the beast. The Relay For Life Clothing Fair 2010 is a lot like that. My first glimpse of it was on the ground at the New Delhi region.

PreOpening_NewDelhi2

Charming little village but as I looked around, I realized how much I wasn’t seeing.

PreOpening_NewDelhi

It didn’t take me long to realize that the fair this year was bigger than ever. With eight regions themed for the fashion capitals of the world, there’s bound to be something for everybody.

PreOpening_Tokyo

It didn’t matter where I stood, I couldn’t get a good look at all of it. Perhaps because there was just too much to see. The central plaza in the Entertainment region is filled with sculpture and festooned with stages.

Central_Plaza

But even from there, you can’t really see everything. There’s just too much to see. I tried getting up high enough to see over the whole region. Somebody said this guy’s name was Nelson. He looked like a Nelson to me.

PreOpening_London

But even from way up there, I couldn’t really get a sense of the thing. It was too big — just too vast to take in from a single vantage point. Or at least that’s what I thought until I came to a small corner of the middle region. That’s when I really saw the big picture and I got a very clear picture of what the Clothing Fair is all about.

Yes, it really is a question of perspective.

In_Memoriam

Thank you to all the people who have worked so hard to make the Clothing Fair one of the premier events in SL. As we spend the next nine days celebrating and enjoying the creations that are gathered here for this special time, remember that every linden you spend goes to a worthy cause.

Simone a la Lagerfeld

March 4th, 2010 by Roland

I’ve long admired the classic Lagerfeld advertisements for Chanel. There’s an iconic set from (I think) the ’90s with a wide format image with the single word Chanel on it. There are dozens of them. Ever since we did the Oh Simone! Show for Eclectic Visions last year, I’ve been obsessing about doing a kind of homage to Lagerfeld’s vision featuring the work of Simone!

This is the best one so far, I think.

Mix and Match

March 1st, 2010 by Roland

I said earlier that I love all these separates from Simone! They make mix and match a breeze.

The baggy jeans and blue twill shirt are separates from Style Starts Here. I took the jacket from yesterday’s suit and added it to dress up this very casual look. I love the way the baggy jeans drape and the shading in the shirt is superb, even if you can only see a little of it in this picture. The suit jacket adds just the right amount of polish and class.

Seriously, guys, if you’re looking to fill in a wardrobe with some great looking pieces that all work well together at a very reasonable price, you need to get your avis over to Simone! and Style Starts Here.

Takin’ Care of Business

February 28th, 2010 by Roland

It’s surprising how difficult it can be to find a good suit on the grid without going broke.

Surprising unless you know about Simone! that is.

For several days I’ve been looking around for something approaching a conservative business suit. There are a lot of great formals, and even some superb suits, but finding a nice conservative, vested suit has been difficult. While I was at Simone’s Style Starts Here the other day, I stopped into her men’s shop over in Simone! I’m glad I did.

This is the black vested suit and it was just what I needed. When I snagged it, the price tag caught my eye. I paid 100L for it.

You read that right. 100L!

This was so reasonable I bought the blue one to go with it.

The great thing about buying a suit is that you get a bunch of separates to mix-n-match. This set is no exception. The plethora of layers and the standalone jacket layer make this an exemplary value at three times the price. It was such a good value, I went back and bought two more – in red and green.

This outfit has two things that I wish were different. First, I wish the pants had at least one layer without the tail of the vest on it. It keeps the pants out of the mix-n-match pool which is not a biggie. I’ve got other pants that I can wear with the shirt. Second, I really wanted the navy suit to have a navy jacket instead of the black. I understand it would be weird to have just the one suit with the different color jacket, but this is such a great piece and the navy version is the only one with different colored pants. At 100L I’m not complaining, mind you. The black jacket over the navy pants with the grey vest and blue tie look great.

Rust Never Sleeps!

February 27th, 2010 by Roland

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again … and again … and again.

I love Simone!

This afternoon I took a break from working to replenish an aged wardrobe. With my new classes at Fashion Institute, I’m finding that I need to take more pictures of me and to prepare more styles. I’m up to my av-pits in tee shirts and jeans but there are some serious gaps in the “fashion staple” department. Not the least of which is a collection of non-jean trousers and some suitable buttoned shirts. Luckily, I know Style Starts Here has a nice collection.

It didn’t take long to find this great rust colored shirt and a pair of clay colored trousers to go with. One of the things I love about Simone! is that she always has stuff on multiple layers. The shirt, for example, comes in under, shirt, and jacket layers (with the boxer or pant layer shirt tail) so I can wear it tucked or not in almost any circumstance. I frequently like tossing on a jacket to dress up an outfit (more on that in a later post) so having the ability to go “untucked casual” with a shirt works well for me.

The clay slacks, likewise, come in boxer and pants layers so I have a lot of flexibility in how I wear them. The boxer layer, of course, requires some tall boots but I have a few pair of those and this pair of heavy pants will go well with them.

Thanks, Simone!

Make It Work

Xenobia Foxclaw over on Xen’s Pen pointed out this monthly contest from Models’ Workshop and Tres Beau. The game involves a box o’ parts. The objective is for everybody to start with the same box and come up with two outfits using at least two of the items from the box and then adding to it.

In the first round, you make an outfit and submit a picture. The best pictures get tapped to do a runway show with that first outfit and the second. The catch is that the second outfit needs to use the leftover items from the box. This sounded like a heck of a lot of fun to me, so …

The box for this month included a pair of jeans with prim cuffs and a short sleeved white shirt with henley neckline with an optional prim collar. There are layers for each.

I thought the shirt and jeans had a particularly bohemian look to them and I added a pair of JCS Oslo boots and the jacket from SF Designs Autumn Set. The beret is actually a freebie women’s hat from Tesla (Danielle) that I sized and colored to match the jacket. The look was *really brown* until I added a splash of color with :sey’s Afghan scarf in red. I added Role’s Recon glasses to give it a bit of an intellectual look and I’m really pleased with the way it came out.

I shot the photo on location at Bogarts Jazz Club, using the Bugatti they have parked at the curb for a suitably European setting.

Yes – this could be a lot of fun.

A Fitting Print

October 21st, 2009 by Roland

A few weeks back I was in a show featuring some of Simone’s fashions and I wrote about one of the outfits. Before that show I was poking around over there and found this smashing print.

It’s not often one finds a nice print for men – we of the testosterone poisoned tend to be drawn to simple patterns, bold colors, and inappropriate humor – but this one struck my fancy enough to buy and I’m glad I did. I forgot about it until yesterday when I found that Simone had dropped a pair of her new men’s trousers into Simone’s Design Group as a gift. I don’t usually wear brown and blue together, but in this case, I think they go well together. As with all the clothing I’ve gotten from Simone, they come on variety of layers, giving wonderful flexibility in wearing them in mix-n-match combination.

New From Simone!

October 19th, 2009 by Roland

One of the names we don’t hear often enough when talking about men’s clothing is Simone! She’s had a nice section in her Style Starts Here store for men’s casual and sports wear for quite some time. She’s also had a few formal pieces tucked away in a secret location behind her bridal shop, but she’s gotten a few of the newer men’s pieces out now and I scored a couple of pieces.

NewSuit_Blue

I’ve been looking for something a little different lately and this falls into that category. I love the texture of this with the navy blue and a faint pinstriping. The fabric has a sheen to it and the styling is impeccable. I paired it with the Barbie White Vest and Pink Tie combo for a very snazzy business look that’s a step up from the Same-Ole-Suit.

The last time I looked (Saturday night) the shop had a collection of shirts and vests, and this suit broken down into separates as well. Like the jacket but not the slacks? No problem. Simone! was also showing a more formal suit with tails, also broken down into separates to mix and match. She was in the store while I was visiting and made the comment “I’ve got a LOT more to put out,” so I’m kinda anxious to go back and see what she might have added since. The design is crystal clear and beautifully executed and the color selections are just plain fun. I couldn’t afford to get them all, but I did get another one of the suits. It may become my favorite just because it’s such a fun color to wear.
