Maverick Design Competition

Friday, July 10th, 2009

Maverick Design has a “BEST LOOK” competition going on with a list of prizes that’s pretty impressive including cash and merch that’ll total over 80K. When I heard about it, I knew I wanted to enter. After all these nightly competitions I’ve been doing for the last few months, I have a lot of practice in creating new looks all the time.

The First Rule is that it has to use a Maverick shape. Since shape is the base, I’ve taken a few days to look at some Maverick shapes and I’ve settled on “Disorder.”

I picked it because I liked the shape of the skull, and because it was a very different looking shape than my own while still not being the square-block, all shoulder look that I don’t really like. I tried out “Intense” and “Taker” shapes – they were hunt prizes and I got them for free – but for the competition I wanted to make my entry as “stand out” as possible, which meant biting the bullet and buying one of the stock shapes at full price.

When looking at shapes, I find that getting the skin off so that I’m not being fooled by shading and color is really useful to get an idea of what the actual structure is that I’m working with. I built a custom, red skin that has the basic avatar shading baked in but omits all the other details that a skin applies.

This is a model sized avi (7’10″) and two things jumped out at me – calves and skull. This shape has a bit of development in the lower leg, something I’ve never noticed before, and the skull is almost perfectly oval. He has nice shoulders and hips that aren’t too narrow or too short.

For comparison, here’s my normal shape with the same red skin and three veiws.

My normal shape is 7’9″ and I think the extra inch is in the skull. Roland has a flat top skull! The other thing that jumps out at me is – again – the legs. The legs on the Disorder shape are about equal to the length of the torso, while my Roland legs are about the same length as my full upper body, including my head. That puts my normal midpoint at crotch level while Disorder is slung a little closer to the ground.

I was intrigued by the differences in the two head shapes so I lined them up to see what, exactly, the differences were.

Face on, Roland’s skull doesn’t look quite so flat on top, but the structure is wider, and less ovoid than Disorder. Note that pupils and mouth corners are lined up in both. That’s one of the things I look for in a shape. The width of a person’s eyes – pupil to pupil – is about the same as their mouth.

In profile, the differences are more pronounced.

The depth of Roland’s skull, along with the more vertical forehead gives Roland’s head a heavier feel and more depth in the face. It also requires that Roland’s jawline be lower so that it lines up more realistically with the back of his skull. Disorder’s skull, being shorter front-to-back, gets a more natural looking egg shape. It should be interesting fitting hair, although hats will probably be easier.

I’m allowed two photos in this contest and I have to include the styling sheet with the specific body parts and/or clothing that’s in the photo, along with a LM to the shop where it can be bought. One of the pictures should probably be at least bared to the waist, but the other could be almost anything.

And, ladies, this contest is open to women, too, with separate prize piles going to each male and female. Find out more at Maverick Designs.

The contest ends at the end of the month, but initial entries get posted in the shop. I think I’ll try to get mine in early.

Congratulazioni, Molto Sete

Thursday, July 9th, 2009

In one of those “ain’t it a small grid” days, I found out through a back channel that one of my modeling cronies and her partner were opening up a new sim today and kicking off with a massive day of fashion aboard the Steam Ship Serenade with three shows back to back to back. I was lucky enough to be able to attend the first two, but before I talk about that, you really need to see the amazing build that is Molto Sete and the Steam Ship Serenade.

The build itself is a cruise ship anchored in the lagoon of a pair of islands. The setting is idyllic and the place is crammed with things to do – like shopping, surfing, fishing, and even a romantic overlook.

The ship itself is a great build as well.

On the top deck is a fabulous pool that’s got floats, pose balls, and lots of places to sit out and enjoy the sun and company.

And if you really like it, there are staterooms for rent so you can live there. I’m not sure how many of them there are, but at 450L a week for 100prims it’s a pretty nice deal.

I didn’t discover everything that was aboard, but I did manage to find the theatre.

And, then, of course, no model could build a ship without having a runway.

It was this runway that attracted my attention this morning. At 9am, Ghost Trefoil and the Serenade Supermodels put on a great display of SF Designs current line. From the Performance Suit modeled delightfully by a pair of models through dresses and tuxes, costumes and casual, the models did a great job for a large crowd that included Swaffette herself in the audience. At noon, one of the only “men only” shows I’ve ever seen went off, apparently without a hitch. Ghost did a wonderful job of calling a show of Sartoria’s men’s wear that included several pieces that I’d never seen before. The final cardigan, modeled very nicely by Apollo Call, was matched with a nice ensemble of jeans and sneakers that put the sweater in perfect context. The audience wasn’t as large for this noon show, but they were very enthusiastic and in a surprise appearance traveller Bade showed up at the back of the venue.

I managed to snag a couple of pictures, but with a bad connection, they didn’t come out very well.

For me, it was a great day getting to meet swaffette Firefly and traveller Bade in the same day, in the same venue. I’ve long admired both of these designers’ work and to get to actually meet them in the avatar, that was something.

Unfortunately, real life kept me off the grid for the 2pm showcase of new designers but I have no doubt that the show went off marvelously, showing off the work of Alair Cortes of Pocket Mirrors, LadyCatherine Fairey designer from Butterfly EffectZ, and AprilR1 Braveheart of The Rose Collection (TRC) — names that might well become as famous as SF Designs and Sartoria. Ghost Trefoil has demonstrated a rare ability to collect skilled and talented people around her and I expect that shows aboard the Serenade will become hugely popular events in the future.

Congratulations to Captains Ghost Trefoil and Rush Parkin on a Grand Opening to remember.

Hawaii

Wednesday, July 8th, 2009

Sometimes there’s just no helping it and I can’t take it seriously. Tonight was one of those. The theme was “Styling Hawaii” and I don’t know about you, but nothing says “Hawaii” to me like a badly dressed tourist.

hawaiian

What makes a tourist outfit so horrible isn’t necessarily the things they wear so much as what they wear together. I’ve taken a nice SHIKI Aloha shirt and put it with a pair of purple plaid shorts. The shorts themselves aren’t that bad, but with the red, flowered shirt the effect is a bit blinding. Add a few cliche touches like the black socks with sandals, the oversized camera, and – of course – a lei. Viola! Hawaii.

The Result

Not too terribly surprising, I didn’t place. I don’t really care. I won this contest the last time we did it. I have no idea why I won it then, but I’ve got a pretty good idea why I didn’t win this one.

Everybody hates a tourist.

What Would I Do Differently?

Not a thing. My goal tonight was to just go out and get my two votes. Having won this before, I really had no urge to see if I could win it again. I just wanted to see how creative I could be by interpreting the theme in a way that avoided the cliche of grass skirt and hula. I did that.

Friday is Body Piercing. I wonder if I can find a copy of that “Between the Lines” fish hook prize from April’s Gone Fishing Hunt …

Paint It Black

Wednesday, July 8th, 2009

Normally, Tuesday night is RL Family night so I don’t get to do the Tuesday events. Last night’s Styling Black was an exception.

So many ways to do “black” and no time to really pick a good one. I grabbed my black tie and tails outfit from SF Design, added a bearded skin (Belleza) and black hair (UW.st) and made it to the stage with 5 minutes to spare.

The Results

I got my two votes. The judge was also the announcer and everything else. I felt sorry for him and didn’t want to try to second guess him. It’s hard to see a guy on stage with so many good looking women. A cross I must learn to bear.

What Would I Do Differently?

Everybody went formal – or at least high fashion. I should have anticipated that and gone in a different direction. I had a lot of “black” to choose from and I could have picked something else.

Night Gowns

Tuesday, July 7th, 2009

As noted in a previous post, the theme for the evening was “Night Gowns.” Predictably, there was a last minute, unannounced change to “Night Gown or PJs.” Luckily I had already decided to wear my PJs and go anyway so I was prepared.

The idea was to go dressed ready to meet the lady wearing the night gown. Since the organizers changed it to include PJs, I didn’t need the fig leaf.

The first thing you’ll notice is that I look very different than normal. This look is based on Ivy Maverick’s “Intense” from Maverick Designs and the Belleza Johan skin. The hair and eyes are from MADesigns — Cruz in platinum blond and Naturals unbelievable blue. The outfit itself consists of a pair of XTC Black China Silk Pajamas and a pair of Shiny Things BoHo Sandals. I kept the accessories simple with Smooth Designs’ Snake Amulet and an ear stud textured to match. I was very excited about this look and thought that, if there were a woman judge, I might have a chance to place – theme or not.

As a side note and the reason I’m wearing a different shape, Maverick is having a “BEST LOOK” contest this month with upwards of 80,000L of prizes and the shape was available in the Just For Guys Hunt fedora so I was trying it out to see how I liked it. I’m working up an entry myself and wanted to test drive one of the Maverick shapes on stage to see how it was received. For more information, visit Maverick Designs.

The Results

I got my two votes. Three women in night gowns won. I picked the same three to win, so I was not surprised with the choices. I’d have changed the order a bit, but that’s pretty good considering I was picking from a field of twelve or so.

After the contest, I contacted the judge for some feedback and learned that one of the difficulties is that I’m so different. For a judge who knows how to rate female models – because she is one – knowing what to look for in males seems foreign. She assured me that I’d done well, but the comparison between a guy in his jammies and a woman in a negligee leaves the male on the shorter side of the equation. I had a respectable score, and I’m not complaining because I picked the same three. It was an interesting insight, and I’m grateful to the judge for telling me. It’s very useful information.

What Would I Do Different?

I think I’d have gotten a different pair of shoes. I’m not sure what, exactly, but guys are at a disadvantage in this kind of boudoir contest — pajamas aside — in that we’d be barefoot here. With the set-up the way it was, a guy wearing a pair of silk pajama bottoms and little else would be on that very short private runway between closet and bed. Typically, I wouldn’t put on a pair of shoes, even sandals or slippers. But going on stage barefoot isn’t a good idea. Go figure.

I might have gone darker. The Johan skin is made for blond hair, or at least auburn, but this might have been a hotter look if I’d gotten a dark hair – black or brown.

Fourth of July Weekend Festivities over and I wanted to come back and do a contest. Tonight?
