He's Got Legs!

Friday, June 12th, 2009

With apologies to ZZ Top, tonight’s contest was “Great Legs” and the difficulty for me is, once more, this is a woman’s field. Guy’s legs are knobby, hairy, and generally kept fishbelly white under long pants. At least, my legs. So, trying to do this theme took a lot of mental re-alignment on my part.

In order to show off a great pair of legs, the skin has to define key elements such as front and back of the knee and – for guys – a well sculpted thigh. I chose LeLutka’s Absolute because it has great definition without looking cartoonish.

I picked a beach boy look by adding Uncle Webs “Angel Shine” Reed, my favorite Shiny Things Bo-Ho Sandals, a pair of ache lowcut swim trunks, and a straw colored tee shirt from Moonshine. The body oil is from Nyokos.

To accessorize, I added my Crowe glasses from primOpic, the Walkabout Men’s Choker from Sable Rose Jewelry, M.R.M.’s Surf Bracelet, my own ruby stud earring, and a knotted leather bracelet from the Mustang Trading Post resized to fit my ankle.

The Result

Very confusing. Not that I expected to place. This was a contest for women, one of several in the next few days that will be impossible for me to place in.

But confusing because the winners had perhaps the least well defined legs in a rather large field. Obviously my definition of “great legs” and the judge’s definition varied on the definition of definition.

Perhaps the answer lies in a statement made by one of the organizers after the winners were announced. “FYI for great looking leggs 100 and having a great leggs as a model no muscles on the leggs”

I must remember that for the final that’s coming up.

What Would I Do Differently?

The challenge here is to frame and feature the leg in whatever look I come up with. To my mind that means showing lots of leg and keeping it simple and elegant.

Still, I could have:
- Added a tattoo
- Changed out footwear to something like a horenbeek trainer, or a pair of chucks

Apparently learning what the criteria for judging might be would be good, too.

Fashion Expo 2009

Thursday, June 11th, 2009

I’m a derelict! After posting about the Expo starting up this week, my schedule has kept me too busy to visit it. I grabbed a few minutes this morning to find out what I’m missing. Turns out, I’m missing a lot.

We’re off to see the wizard!

fashion_expo_1

The theme for this expo is – as you might be able to tell from the Yellow Brick Road here – the Wizard of Oz. The shops are nicely done and laid out in an accessible pattern.

fashion_expo_3

With four sims worth of shopping, I’m a bit upset that I wasn’t more on the ball. I’m not sure I can even see everything between now and the close of the Expo on Sunday, but I’m sure going to try. The organizers have provided a teleport board that serves as an index to the vendors as well as cutting down on walk/fly time.

With over fifty designers scttered across four regions, the only remaining question is, “Where to begin?”

Teen Angel

Thursday, June 11th, 2009

Wednesday’s theme was “Teenager” and I found this to be harder than it might appear.

So, not exactly an “angel” but here’s the look:

Teens live in a horrible place – hormone driven, socially challenged, and locked into a system that strives to control them while at the same time challenging them to escape.

To demonstrate that angsty level of style, I chose the black Winter Vest from Kiwi Designs layered over a Rebel Designs Hoodie base and >TRUTH< Blood Tshirt. Nuvolino provided the Surreal Punk Jeans while the Black Chucks are from LiNe. Hat and Hair are from :sey. Accessories include the LacieCakes Tagged Silver Guns and a delightfully clunky watch from BUKKA.

To keep the youthful theme going, I changed my shape to a narrower, less developed version and used Belleza's Jonas medium tone skin for the more
emo looking eyes and sallow complexion.

The Result

A very surprising tie for third place:

This was harder than it looked. The challenge is that while we all have an idea of “teen” and what that looks like, actually pulling it off depended less on outfit than on skin.

What Would I Do Differently?

I’d get a more youthful looking skin. Me Belleza and LeLutka skins have a definite adult cast to them. They’re not as mature looking as some but still not teen-ager. Something like Den-Dou’s Jiro or Ichiro might have worked better.

I’d pick a recognized “style” of teen — emo, gothy, school boy, something. This outfit was pieced together out of hunt treasures, and bits and pieces from my inventory. While it sorta worked, the third place result says it could have worked better.

Father Roland

Wednesday, June 10th, 2009

Almost let this one slip by and that would have been unfortunate!

The theme for Monday was Styling Nun/Priest. Luckily for me, I participated in a renewal of vow ceremony not too long ago and as part of that, I bought a very nice Dress Cassock. Ecce, Pater Roland:

Cardinal Sin from Basilica Cardinale executed this lavish dress cassock very well. The flexi skirt portion has just the right stiffness to feel right to me. The textures and prim-work are terrific. I added a pair of Evocative Cuban Ankle boots for a nice dressy finish.

The skin is LeLutka’s Absolute (Pale) and adds great mood to the piece. The hair is MADesign’s Marcus in dark brown.

The Results

Father Roland wins.

The outfit itself wasn’t all that, but I think what got the edge was the animation work. I added a “monk walk” so that when I went onto the stage, my hands folded into the sleeves of my cassock and I walked slowly with my head down. I added some specialized poses to my line up — including a prayer pose, a “receiving arms” pose, a genuflection, and a blessing. Those really helped sell the outfit, I think.

What Would I Do Differently?

I kept trying to find a crucifix to wear around my neck. They just didn’t sit right on the richly textured buttons because all the ones I have are too small in scale, or too dark to show against the black background. A nicely ornate golden crucifix might have helped.

This was an “out of the box and walk” outfit. Cardinal Sin did a great job in putting the outfit together but it left little for me to do to “style” other than the addition of the animations. It might have been interesting to see how I might have done had I taken something like a simple alb and added some detail of my own.

Then again, it’s hard to argue with first.

Make Him Over Hunt 121-151

Tuesday, June 9th, 2009

Wow!

That’s all I can say about it.

Wow!

Today, one last outfit from the end of the hunt. I really liked this outfit called “Made Men” from Toxic Tiger (#143). The jeans are really well done and the shirt/waistcoat combo has some nice cuffs and collar. The Jungle Wear (#136) “Claws” surprised me when I saw them in the folder. I was expecting something a tad more Neko-ish. The monochrome palette on the shoes made them a natural to go with the grey vest.

For accessories, I added the Convent Necklace from Goth1c0 (#140), the ceramic and silver bracelet from Bull and Bear (#132), and the Patchouly Belt from Kosh (#151) – the last item in the hunt. I liked the weight on the Convent Necklace. Sometimes men’s jewelry feels a bit heavy and blocky. This one, while carrying a bit of extra heft, seems to work really well. The bracelet gave me a bit of trouble fitting, until I realized that the texture had some alpha-layer action going on, giving it a sort of pierced look and that my skin was supposed to show through in spots. This item is mod, too, so I was able to shape it bit better to my wrist than a simple round shape would do. And I had to wear the belt. It’s the last item on the list, and worked with this outfit. It’s also very well done. I have trouble wearing belts but this one didn’t require a lot of bit-fiddling to get a good fit.

I won’t add to the bandwidth that the Hunt is generating by adding a lot more pictures and commentary. There are some terrific posts already, including a very comprehensive catalog of finds over at Free Finds for Men and a great set of “highlight” posts over on the Make Him Over Hunt blog.

I will say a heart-felt, “Thank you,” to Tarsis Gausman, Samara Pennell, and all the people who are currently helping to support this great opportunity for some terrific designers of men’s wear to get known.

Guys, if you haven’t had a chance to do the hunt, take a few hours and run through some of the stores. Visit, vote, and support them by buying something if you can. I know I’m putting together an index of my favorites and I’ll be going back to see what I might have missed.

Let ‘em know you noticed.

MHOH 70 – 90

Friday, June 5th, 2009

The hits just keep on coming. I ran short of Hunt Time yesterday so only got through 20 more treasures. One thing I’ve noticed is that there are a lot of shirts and jackets. Some are part of outfits but a lot are just really cool toppers that work well with almost anything. Here are six of them that I found in just this last set of finds:

Helen Keller Day – June 27th

Friday, June 5th, 2009

On the subject of promoting good causes, I got this note from the Virtual Helping Hands people about an upcoming event that promises to be interesting.

“I am only one; but still I am one. I cannot do everything, but still I can do something; I will not refuse to do the something I can do.”
– Helen Keller (1880-1968) American Writer and Activist

“Helen Keller Day in Second Life” is a 24-hour PDT event on Saturday, June 27, in Second Life.com (SL) on the four Ye Olde Supporte Faire sims with vendors, employers, presentations, and fun for all.

If you’re not aware of the VHH, they are an umbrella group with units working on various aspects of accessibility on the Grid.

I’ve seen a list of the events planned and it’s a pretty ambitious schedule for a single day’s effort. The fashion tie-in here is that Style Enabled Modeling Agency is trying to organize a fashion show to showcase the work done by models who may be visually impaired, or in wheel chairs, etc. They need designers who would be willing to participate and take advantage of this opportunity to reach a clientele that’s outside the world of the fashionista on the grid.

If you’re interested contact the head of the agency, Polgara Paine, or leave a comment here in the blog and I’ll pass it to her.

Don’t feel like you need to contribute a ton. If all the designers just contributed one outfit to the cause …

I’ll post more on this as I find out more, too.

Relay for Life Events

Friday, June 5th, 2009

Nevar Lobo has passed me these two upcoming events in support of the American Cancer Society.

The Fashion Expo is coming up next Monday and runs through the following Sunday. For updates and more information, you can find them on the web. It looks like it could be a blast and I’m hoping I’ll get a chance to get in a do a little preview work to give you a better feel for it as we get closer.

Following closely on that we have:

This looks like a blast. I’m thinking of it as a Fashion Event for the non-Humans on the grid because — you know — fighting cancer is important to everybody regardless of morphology. You can find out more about this event by visiting them on their blog.

The Fantasy Faire will kick off the day after the Fashion Expo closes so the next couple of weeks are shaping up to be really exciting.

Stay tuned for further developments!
