Man in Black

Tuesday, May 12th, 2009

It’s been a while since I’ve been able to participate in the contests so it was good to get back on stage tonight. The bad news was that didn’t really have time to prepare much because of all the Grand Re-Opening festivities. The good news was that I had something for “Country Singer” already.

Man in Black

Yes, I used this costume a few weeks ago and lost, but under the circumstances, I had to pull it out and try again. I did look at my advice to myself from last time and made some changes.

I tossed the musical gestures. As fun as they were, it’s not really “modeling” so I left them off.

Without them, I followed Coco Chanel’s advice on accessorizing and “took off the last thing I put on.” In this case it was the guitar stuck to my back. I was thinking that looked funny just stuck on there. It needed a strap, but getting a strap to hold it was beyond my timeframe and skill level. Off it went.

I changed the skin from Redgrave to LaLutka. The Emil Pale skin looked ok, but the LaLutka Absolute gave me a closer approximation to the skin tone I wanted to represent him in later life.

The Result

Third Place!

I was grateful not to have to judge the group. There were some terrific looks and I was honored to be selected.

What Would I Do Differently?

For this particular look, I think this is about as good as it gets. The representation of the Man in Black is as near as I can make it. If I could find a guitar with a strap, that might make a difference, but I really like the clean look without a lot of gimcrackery.

I could change the look and pick somebody else with a strong image.

The Masquerade

Monday, May 11th, 2009

Caliber’s Grand Re-Opening is complete. The store is officially opened. The events through the weekend culminated in a masquerade ball this evening at Bogey’s with DJ Dakota Christensen providing the romantic music and costumed dancers enjoying the night and each other. It was a night of romance, a night of mystery, a night of dancing and fun.

It was a great way to end a great weekend.

The Mask

Thanks to Nevar Lobo and Amethyst Starostin for inviting me to play along and chronicle the opening.

Congratulations to Nyre Gray and Aurelius Draken – the driving forces behind Caliber – on a truly grand re-opening.

LabGraal Concert

Saturday, May 9th, 2009

Caliber is reopened and it’s official! They’ve had their first sim crash.

In the middle of the LabGraal opening concert the throng managed to crash the sim and interrupt for just a few minutes. Thanks to fast work on the part of organizers, we got the link to listen in our local browsers and the music continued.

There’s no way words can do justice to the sound of this fantastic group of musicians. The combination of African, Celtic, and other ethnic musical styles blended in amazing ways to give the unique sound they call Keltic.

It was fantastic.

But while you may have missed the concert, you haven’t missed LabGraal. You can find more about them on their MySpace page and at their website. You can even order CDs online.

If you are a fan of World music of any flavor, you owe it to yourself to give them a listen. They have a fantastic sound and a great mix of music.

And that’s not all. You may have missed this concert, but it’s just the kick off for a day of music here at the Grand Re-Opening of Caliber. There are two more concerts this afternoon and a party with a live DJ at the new club — Bogie’s. That’s starting at 4pm SLT today and running into the Wheee! Hours.

Get on your horse and get on over to Caliber’s Grand Re-opening.

A Brand New Day

Saturday, May 9th, 2009

The grand re-opening of Caliber is only a few hours away, so I went back this morning to grab some more landscape shots. The store itself is gorgeous, but the setting deserves a post of its own.

I think Caliber is going to become one of my favorite places to be on the Grid.

Xanadu

Thursday, May 7th, 2009

When I first saw the new build for Caliber, these lines from Coleridge sprang immediately to mind

In Xanadu did Kubla Khan
A stately pleasure-dome decree :
Where Alph, the sacred river, ran
Through caverns measureless to man

External Night

The scale and majesty of the place is difficult to comprehend in snapshots. Under the dome a huge open area creates a sense of cathedral — or perhaps elven palace.

Rotunda

The two main wings provide for plenty of space to display the many different kinds of goods available for sale.

Store Interior

From furniture and fixtures to clothing and accessories, Caliber has an enormous collection of goods.

One of the things that kept making me go “wow” was the attention to detail in terms of the framing of views.

Inside Looking Out

Whether you’re looking around the store, or around the grounds, there’s always something to look at that’s worth seeing.

Here’s a view of the jazz club, Bogie’s, from the front door of the store.

Turn Medieval On Ya

Thursday, May 7th, 2009

Some nights, I’m just not able to get up to the level I need to. Tonight was one of those nights. Major league RL interference kept me from really preparing for this so I was grabbing bits and bytes right up until show time. The theme was Styling Medieval and I had just the outfit.

medieval

I wrote about this the other day, so I’ll just point out I added a sword, dagger, and a necklace to make it “Medieval” and called it good.

Results

I got my two votes. This was a night where I agreed with the judging. The three winners all had great looks. They deserved it.

What Would I Do Differently?

Tights, definitely tights. I think what I really needed to do was pick somebody – like Robin Hood – and go for that look.

Better accessories. The Celtic Sword from the library was stylistically correct but it didn’t even have a scabbard. I just stuck it to my back. That coulda been much better.

SPQR

Wednesday, May 6th, 2009

Anybody who’s ever seen a gladiator movie has seen those letters. They’re the abbreviation for “Senatus Populusque Romanus” – The Senate and People of Rome. We’ve seen a ton of togas around the Grid but Caliber has something that’s a little less formal.

roman

I really like the textures used on the tunic. It has a great nubbly feel to it that isn’t done justice in the picture and the pattern on the trim is very nicely done. The bracers add a nice finishing touch.

In honesty, I have to say, the other various prim attachments that came with this outfit gave me grief. The package includes a belt (pictured) and a shoulder cape (not). I couldn’t make the belt fit comfortably. It tended to shift in odd ways as my AO shifted my stand. I suspect it might have been the attachment point but I didn’t experiment with it. It also felt a little heavy for the tunic, but that might have been me. And in defense of this designer’s work, I have a problem with pretty much every prim belt I’ve ever worn, so this could well be an issue with me and not the outfit. It looks pretty good in the photos.

The shoulder cape, I just couldn’t figure out how to work it. No matter how I stood or where I put it, the flexi part of the cape draped oddly and my arm was always sticking thru it. Ultimately, I decided to leave it off for this shoot. My not-so-mad Prim-Adjustment Skillz just weren’t up to dealing with it and I thought the tunic looked better without it than it looked with my half-baked attempts to adjust it.

This is only e pluribus unum of the great outfits you’ll find at the grand re-opening of Caliber this weekend. Whatever time period you’re into, you’ll find something to suit your taste.

Tomorrow, pictures of the store and landscaping. The place is amazingly! I only hope I can do it justice.

Bogie's

Tuesday, May 5th, 2009

Yesterday I went to the new Caliber-at-Rivendell and started poking about before the place really gets going. The club there is called Bogie’s and I was really getting into the mood.

Bogie's

“Of all the gin joints in all the towns in all the world, she walks into mine.”

Ok, well, actually, no. She didn’t. At least not yet. And of course, it’s no gin joint, and it’s not mine, but work with me here!

The decor and ambiance are wonderful. Not exactly a gritty noir Casablanca at the end of the war, but the word “swanky” was invented for this place.

At the front there’s this great piano! I’m no Dooley Wilson, but I was in the Casablanca mood so I had to just sit down and play!
Play It!

Now if I could just sing “As Time Goes By…”

There’s even a dance floor!

Gene Kelley?!

Gene Kelley?! This ain’t Singin’ in the Rain! How’d he get past the bouncer?

Welcome to Bogie’s!

Bogie's

Here’s are some of the keynote events this weekend at Bogie’s:

May 9th:
4pm: Kim Seifert

“Kim’s musical style and personal sound is well suited for high energy country rock, and this where she shines and has the most fun. Her dynamic voice will have your heart singing with joy, and your feet dancing out of control. Polished and clean, with excellent range and emotional power, Kim’s performance will take you away.”

5pm: Srv4u Conacher, “Da Bluez Preacher”.

“Srv4u plays gospel blues and standard blues tunes. His styles and songs range from Peggy Lee’s “Fever” to Stevie Ray Vaughn’s “Pride and Joy”, to newer acts like KT Tunstall. “

May 10:
5pm slt Masquerade Ball : with DJ Dakota Christensen

I know I’ll see you there because “Everybody comes to Bogie’s”

Edward VIII

Tuesday, May 5th, 2009

The theme for the evening was Kings/Queens. While the opportunity was there to play with the terms — Gypsy King, Drama Queen, or even dressing like a playing card like the King of Hearts — I chose to stay pretty un-imaginative. I picked a real king.

King is an interesting theme. The cliche and the archetype are actually rather different. While Henry VIII or Charles I might make interesting theatre for the Doublet and Hose brigade, modern kings seem more interesting to me. For tonight, I’m Edward the Eighth, the last king of England.

EdwardVIII

The suit is standard business fair for a working monarch – morning coat and honors. The morning coat in cranberry is from SF Designs. I made the medals.

Edward VIII has been a special fascination for me ever since I learned that he had given up power for a woman. I wondered at how a king might do that when I was a lad, but I think I finally came to realize that even kings are, first, men. Edward VIII is not free of controversy politcally either but I liked the idea of doing a relatively modern king.

Results
Very predictable results. So predictable, I had two of the three selected 10 minutes before the judge decided. They deserved the win and I was too far out of the box to be a serious contender. I got my two votes.

What Would I Do Different?

The possibilities here are almost endless.

  • Gone with “King of Hearts” as a theme
  • Picked a Charles I costume off the rack.
  • Build myself into Henry VIII
  • Made a pun on either King or Queen – This is one instance where “Drag Queen” or “Drama Queen” might actually have worked.

Maybe the next time.

The Adventurer

Monday, May 4th, 2009

Coolness abounds!

This coming weekend one of the flagship stores in the metaverse is having a grand reopening event and it’s shaping up to be quite the shin-dig with a treasure hunt, gifts, sales, and live events. I’m still pulling the details together myself, but here’s a teaser for you.

The Adventurer

I’m not sure what period this outfit is from. Seems a little advanced for medieval and a little rough for Renaissance but “adventurer” seems to suit it. The formal name is Onyx Gryphon and it’s only one of the period outfits you’ll find at Caliber. I was really taken with the use of texture on the shirt and the single shoulder cape is a great touch. This is a great, understated piece that only required a small amount of fitting to get the shoulder cape to attach and fall properly. It even comes with the circlet. I’m wearing it with a pair of ankle boots, but I could see this with a pair of taller pirate or cavalry boots.

I took a bunch of pictures this morning over at Caliber at Rivendell and I’m looking forward to sharing them with you tomorrow.

And keep this weekend open! The events at Caliber look like they’re gonna be wonderful.
