RFL Day 4 – Ssssh!

Thursday, March 19th, 2009

Halfway thru the week already and I’ve only managed to visit about 2/3rd of the region. Gah. I don’t know where I’m gonna find the time to visit the rest of this place, but you’ve still got time to check out the silent auction! I’ve mentioned it a few times already but here are the details.

Seven Deadly Sins Silent Auction

Seven of SL’s hottest designer have contributed one-of-a-kind gowns to the Relay For Life Silent Auction. Each gown represents one of the sins and all proceeds will go toward helping to fight cancer.

I don’t normally go around in circles where unique, one-of-a-kind designer gowns are even available. To find seven of them in one place is amazing to me. And these are amazing gowns, each one representing hours – if not days – of work on the part of very talented people and brought to the Relay for Life.

sdswrath

RFyre’s entry is Wrath. It’s being auctioned complete with skin and hair and it’s a gorgeous gown.

sdsvanity

Wiccan Sojourner from Bewitched has contributed Vanity and it even comes with a scripted mirror. Hey, don’t be so judgemental. Everybody needs a reflective moment.

sdssloth

Moxie Polano of Haute Couture has given us Sloth. I’d write more, but I’m too lazy.

sdslust

Lapointe & BastChild Designs contributed Lust in passionate red. Given the amount of lust I’ve expended over the Lapointe & BastChilde designs, this seems an appropriate choice.

sdsavarice

Avarice (Greed) is a great group project from Lemania Indigo, Endra Graves and Lestat Reuven. This silent auction item even comes with the chair. That seems pretty generous to me.

sdsgluttony

Nicki Ree contributed a paen to Gluttony in this gorgeous gown inspired by Greek mythology. The gown itself is named Adephagia and it’s gorgeous.

sdsenvy

Last, and hardly least, SF Design adds a touch of green for Envy with this wonderful creation by Swaffette Firefly. Yea. Envy is right. I almost wish I could wear it myself.

Bidding is easy. Go to the venue, click on the vendor, and pick “Place Bid” from the popup menu. Each vendor has a note card with more information about who made it, what’s in it, and even some personal messages from the designers.

These little photo snaps of the vendors and the paintings that inspired the designs really don’t do them justice. You really need to go see them at The Mediterranean Sea.

Remember! All contributions go toward finding a cure for something more deadly than sin.

RFL Day 3 – Information Overload

Wednesday, March 18th, 2009

It’s the beginning of Day 3 and I’m lost. I’ve seen sp much great stuff my brain topped off about 50 things ago. Anything new just displaces something that’s there already and I’m trying to find ways to keep track of it all.

First problem:
I don’t have enough money to get everything I want right now, and I wanna keep track of the shops, designers, and outfits so I can get them later.

First solution:
I’m grabbing landmarks from the shops, but renaming them in my inventory so the thing I’m interested in is in the name along with RFL and the shop.
As an example: I just saw this really nice Morning Coat at Rebel Hope Designs but I can’t afford it right now. It wasn’t on the purple vendor so I know it’ll be around later. I grabbed a store landmark and it reads:

! Rebel Hope Designs-RH Engel J, Monarch Bay (213, 83, 27)

This is great but I’m missing two pieces of information. I renamed it to:

RFL Morning Coat : Rebel Hope Designs

Now all my RFL scavenged LMs get sorted together in my inventory and I know what the heck it was I looking at so when I go to hunt it down I don’t get to the front of the shop and think, “Buh?”

Second Problem:
As I’m walking around, I come across stuff that I think might be cool to write about or ideas that I’d like to hold on to. Ya, that lasts until the next — Oh Look! Shiny!

Second Solution:
I opened a Notepad document on my desktop and I’m keeping notes as I go. It takes a little disciplline, but it’s something to do while I’m waiting for the rez. By jotting down the stuff as I go, maybe I’ll be able to figure out what I did after I get done and can keep the trains of thought from becoming derailed.

TP to Caspian Sea

Great morning coat at Rebel Hope

Bought that Marinesta *[MST] 062 Riri Parka NAVY SLCF

Nevar just sent out a notice about the Photo Contest – I should write a story about that

To-A-Tee – the pocket watch that’s supposed to be in a Treasure chest somewhere

Remember to do a story on the Treasure Hunt

Third Problem:
How to type all this stuff!

Third Solution:
Right click, grab properties, copy in-world, paste in Notepad.

Ok, these probably seemed obvious to the old hands here, but I’m not really used to documenting my in-world activities. This is working for me at the moment tho and I hope to avoid the issues I ran into yesterday when I had a picture of a shop and couldn’t remember which one it was and had to spend 20 minutes flying around trying to find it again so I could write about it.

What about you old hands at this? Any tips or tricks to share?

RFL Day 2 – Report from the Floor

Wednesday, March 18th, 2009

Some of the frenetic first blush has passed, and the issues with lag are being addressed as quickly as possible as the organizers struggle to get the kinks out of what might be the Grid’s Largest Mall.

Lots of people are blogging about the clothes, but today I want to talk about the shops themselves. The builders did a great job of creating just the right touch of variety and uniformity to create the backdrop in front of which our little passion play can play out. There are about 5 or 6 basic shapes arranged on the paths and each merchant appears to have some leeway as to how they implement the Pirate theme.

The other day on my preview run, I noticed this cute little diorama in the middle of a shop.

Couture by Cat

I really liked the way Couture by Cat used the ship’s ribs as part of the side wall. It was the first time I really noticed how far the merchants were getting into the decorating.

Today I got a little tired as I wandered the venue so I grabbed a quick nap in this handy store-mounted hammock in Devilish Cupcake’s shop.

store_decor_03

Yes, those are the same red parachute shorts from Barefoot Apparel. They’re low lag and fit perfectly in the beachy theme of the regions.

Refreshed I managed to stumble onward and around the corner I found On a Lark with their pirate themed extravaganza.

store_decor_02

All these decorations are a lot of fun, but the merchants are also competing for a great prize package from SL-Newspaper.com which involves three months of sponsorship for advertising space to promote their products. Over the course of the week, staffers from SL-Newspaper.com will be wandering the sims and judging each shop based on a set of five criteria including how well the decor fits the theme and how attractive it is to shoppers.

This group has really gone all out to coordinate a wide variety of efforts so that everybody who participates can have a lot of fun in a good cause, and maybe win some valuable prizes along the way. From the Seven Deadly Sins Silent Auction, to the Photo Contest, to the Treasure Hunt — and I’m sure I’m forgetting stuff — kudos rightfully go to the Relay Raiders for a great “fleet action.”

I’m still looking for my photo-contest outfit. I haven’t found it yet, but maybe around the next bend …

Surf's Up!

Tuesday, March 17th, 2009

With all the excitement of the SL Clothing Fair, it would have been easy to forget my normal routine, which involves ritual humiliation on the runway on Monday nights.

Tonight’s contest was one of those extremely frustrating moving targets. It started life as, “Styling Daring Bikini.” Which is an interesting idea for a guy, since a bikini is, by definition, a two piece swim suit. At some point in the last week it became “Styling Daring Bikini/Boxers” and later this afternoon it finally settled on “Styling Daring Bikini/Boxers/Swimwear Theme.” With that kind of moving target, there was no way I had any chance of competing with the band-aid and dental floss set.

I took my daring in another direction – rather than showing skin, I went for sexy daring-do.

surfer_01

This was pretty much fun. I looked at a lot of fashion blogs — especially the Surfer Throwdown over on Men’s Second Style — and got some great tips on the surf look. The Boho sandals from Shiny Things, in particular, were one of those great items. When I saw the detail work in them, I had to have them. It blew my budget but what are budgets for? These will work with a variety of outfits and I’m very pleased with them. The Tropical Boardies from Reaction are awesome and the jewelry from MRM was just the right touch.

surfer_02

The hair is the same hair from my Blind Blueberry Zeppelin outfit, Rei from Discord. This time I tinted it blond. The glasses are my Crowe frames from primOptic. I love thoe things. The skin was a shock. It’s a free group gift from Belleza and I always thought it was too pale, until I was looking for a skin for a blond and this one fit better than any I found. It was a bit pale for a surfer, but it had the right feel to it. I used my normal square chinned Roland shape here because the Beckham has just too weak a chin. The tats were another of those pointers I got from the fashion bloggers — the Hades set from Prozak. I may have to wear these more often. I kinda like ‘em. Oh, the open shirt, that was a freebie from Lapointe. I loved the way it went with everything –picking up the textures of the shorts and tatts.

The board I made. I only needed one I could carry but I wanted more than just a flattened cylinder, too. That was a fun build.

And, as expected I got my 2 votes. The band-aid and dental floss brigade won the day. This was a loser for me, but I knew it going in. I had a thong. I coulda been cheesy and worn it, but there’s no daring in that, no style, no story. It’ll be a few days before I can compete again, so I’ll have a chance to think about it.

What would I do differently?

If I weren’t so cheap, I might have dropped a couple thou on a darker tan skin.

I really wanted one of those bandana headbands. I didn’t think of it until it was too late.

Left the shirt off. That Belleza skin has pretty good definition for being as light as it is. I coulda been that daring.

In honesty, there wasn’t anyway I coulda placed tonight, so I probably shoulda just gone out in my Relay for Life Parachute Trunks and called it good.

Stuff
Shirt: Mens “Night Emboss” Grey shirt (Short sleeve) from Lapointe.
Shorts: Tropical Boardies by Reaction
Sandals: Boho from men from Shiny Things
Necklace: Sharktooth from MRM
Ankle and Wrist: White Shell bracelet – a freebie from MRM.
Glasses: Crowe from primOptic

Hair: Rei – Discord
Skin: Belleza mans’ group Gift
Shape: my own.

PS
This picture contest I’m participating in developed a new wrinkle tonight. The organizers announced a new opportunity to get votes by participation in events.

But there’s a catch.

You have to place in one of these contest events and for every time you get 1st, 2nd, or 3rd, you can participate in a monthly fashion show and show off the winning outfits. On the face of it, it seems like a good deal because for every outfit you get on the runway at this monthly show, the organizers will throw in 500 votes and 50L.

The problem — at least for me — is that the same five or six people always win. They’re darn good! They deserve to win.

But the math is daunting. The organization puts up about 15 of these contests a month. That’s 45 award winners who could, theoretically, take their 45 outfits onto the runway. One woman in particular places in almost every competition and she is very, very good. Usually she places first. It’s not too much of a stretch to project that she’ll win at least 10 places out of the 45 – which will give her an extra 5000L and 500 votes every month of the pageant. Take the remaining 35 places and spread them across the 5 most likely winners and assume they’ll each place at least five out of the 15 times. That’s an extra 2500L and 250 votes for them. Leaving 10 opportunities for the remaining 10 regulars to vie for.

So, the simple pay-to-play vote contest – with a little side action on the stage – just got much more complicated. Strategically, these side contests were noise. They had no bearing on getting into the top 10 for the shot at the 100,000L. That changed with this rule change and made it that much more difficult for me to stay the course. Participation in the contests is no longer about the two votes and having fun.

Of course, the other side of this is that the contests are, inherently, unfair and always have been. The top ten slots have nothing to do with fashion or style. They’ll go to those who are willing to pay for them and the rest of it is just negotiation over who’ll pay how much. This just makes those final slots a bit more expensive.

Interesting wrinkle.

RFL Day 1 – Report from the Floor

Monday, March 16th, 2009

Oh.

My.

God.

I was wondering what I’d write about today, the grand opening day of the SL Clothing Fair 2009. I got there a few minutes after the official whistle blew at 10AM SLT and the place was already a mob scene. According to the conference organizers there were 310 people across the 9 regions within 15 minutes of opening.

What’s the story today?

This is the story.
map

Thank you to everybody who’s come in, who plans to come in, and who has donated so much time and effort to this.

It took me over 2 hours just to shop through ONE of the islands. I don’t know if things will lighten up or not as night falls across Europe and spreads to North America, but there are some things you can do to help and to make your own experience less lag-tastic.

Unload your prims. Don’t wear jewelry, belts, or big honking boots. Keep your prim count low and you’ll slide through the crowd more easily.

Flexi. Don’t. Hair is a killer. Tails a no-no. Flexi gowns? Please, Maude, no.

Draw range. Pull it in to 64M and walk around.

It’s a beach, so wear a swimsuit, or simple clothes. There are a few people wandering around in black, white, or red (un-detailed) skin. No nips, no bits, no problems. This is a good place to bring out that Silver Surfer Avatar you’ve been hording.

Just leave the board home.

Shopping. Yes. Oh, my, yes. I’m broke but I’m getting more Lindens ASAP and I’m heading back!

Remember we’re having fun but fun with a purpose.

Together we can help find a cure.

UPDATE:

I’m finding some of the other bloggers out here that are also writin’ up a storm. I’ll add them as I run across them.

Here’s one from Maelynn Cattaneo from Look what the cat brought in: Please Just Act Smart

Here’s another from Kith Decuir at Pretty Little Things: Relay For Life: Shop and Donate! (I think I saw Kith at Sprawl earlier in the day today!)

SL Clothing Fair 2009

Monday, March 16th, 2009

This is gonna be Big! Really Big.

Today at noon marked the official preview for the Relay For Life SL Clothing Fair 2009 and I hied my hiney to the islands to get my first official look at what might be the biggest event I’ve ever seen in SL. Nine islands. Eight dedicated to shopping! One that’s just for fun and set up so that the large scale events won’t keep the serious people from doing what they need to do. Shop!

Light House

I had to start by climbing to the top of the lighthouse just to see what I could see. I saw a ton!

Like Seven Deadly Sins!

7 Deadly Sins

Is it a coincidence that there are seven seas, and seven of SL’s top designers each contributing a unique gown to this terrific Seven Deadly Sins Silent Auction? I don’t think so. If I’m understanding this correctly, the gowns are unique and will be sold only at this auction. Just like that Scottish guy! There can be only one!

And that’s not all that’s happening over the course of the week!

There’s tons of shopping!

Shopping

How about some fashion shows?

Fashion Shows

Check. How about four of them in various times to accommodate different time zones around the globe.

And, of course, there’s shopping.

Shopping!

How about a photo contest?

Photo Contest

This is actually the second photo contest! You need to buy three things (at least) at the Fair and create a look around them. Keep good notes about where you got them in case you inspire somebody else to follow in your footprints. The details are on these signs and you can find them pretty much anywhere you teleport to. First prize is a PhotoLife Studio and there’s no entry fee so why not?

Then, did I mention the shopping?

Shopping!!

Oh, yea. I probably did.

Then there are the people. Walking around I found designers frantically putting the final touches on their shops, tidying up to get ready for the big opening tomorrow at 10am SLT. People like Kit Maitland of CKS Designs.

Kit Maitland - CKS Designs

Every shop is required to have at least one RFL vendor – the purple bordered ones. Take a look at the RFL vendors in that snap. And that’s not all of them that Kit had up in her shop. I asked if she had any message to pass to people and she said, “Just that everyone has done such marvelous job this year setting up the fair…and I hope people come out and enjoy all their hard work and really help us raise a lot of lindens for the ACS!!”

And around the corner I found this guy standing on a taxi.

DCNY Clothing CO - Dave Casanova

That’s Dave Casanova, CEO of DCNY Clothing Co and he was arranging for his models over the coming week. He’d climbed up there to test the poses on the cab and then forgot to step down before being buried by an IM avalanche.

And walking around I saw several of the organizers including Nevar Lobo who stood still while I took his picture.

Nevar Lobo

In spite of some last minute RL complications, he and the rest of the organizing committee was sweeping the area making sure that it would be ready for everybody to arrive on Monday.

And while this is going to be a lot of fun, let’s not forget that the cause is deadly serious.

Chapel

All the shopping, pirates, contests, and effort have gone toward joining us all together to raise money for the American Cancer Society. If you’re reading this, you’ve probably already lost somebody you love to cancer. In my case, it was my father. The American Cancer Society is one of the key agencies that’s helping to finance the elusive cure.

You are part of me

As you’re having fun this week, and you see one of those purple vendors? Remember.

You’re not just buying a dress, or a swim suit, or a piece of jewelry. You’re helping to save a life.

Oh, ya. This is gonna be BIG!

SL Clothing Fair 2009

Sneak Peak – A New Dawn

Saturday, March 14th, 2009

I’ve been hearing that there’ll be pirates at the Relay for Life Clothing Fair that starts on Monday the 16th. I had a few hours to kill this morning so I grabbed my Relay For Life 2009 tee-shirt and snuck out to the venue to get a little look around.

Shivver me timbers!

Pirates!

I can confirm that there are – at least – pirate ships! And where there’s pirate ships, I’m pretty sure you’ll find pirates.

While I was there, I took a few snaps of the venues to give you a feel for what the place looks like. It was early morning and I wanted to get my pictures and get out before the pirates woke up and found me snooping about.

Shops

You can see the roofs of the shops scattered around the trees and this is just the tip of the iceberg. I didn’t dare wander around too much without at least a cutlass.

Street of shops

I did hang around long enough to take this picture of a typical street. There’s plenty of room and plenty of sims. What there isn’t is plenty of time because this event runs from the 16th through 22nd.

Palms

I did take a few minutes to stop and smell the palm trees, but I didn’t dare linger too long. I figured there might be a Relay Raider along any minute and make me walk the plank.

New Dawn

Fun aside, the Relay for Life is a deadly serious effort to raise money and awareness for the American Cancer Society. With your help we can find a cure. The 2009 SL Clothing Fair will open on Monday, March 16, 2009 at 10:00 am SLT and will close at 6:00 pm SLT on Sunday, March 22, 2009. Join the Relay Raiders and all the designers, models, and builders who’ve contributed their time and effort to create this short-lived fashion extravaganza.

Buy a dress. Save a life.

Relay For Life Clothing Fair

Friday, March 13th, 2009

In the last 24 hours I’ve learned of what promises to be a tremendous event – the SL Relay for Life Clothing Fair. I learned that there’s special credentials for bloggers and I’ve been accepted into the press corps for this event!

I’m so excited!

Close But No Cigar. Again.

Thursday, March 12th, 2009

I’ve got to give the organizers credit. They seem to be learning that there are men who participate in these contests. Tonight’s was originally billed as “House Maid” but when the day rolled around, it was rephrased to “Housemaid/Butler.”

Of course, I understand why few men actually participate. It’s really a losing proposition in terms of performance. I really thought I had a chance tonight, but alas it was not to be. Let me introduce tonight’s alter-ego — Head Butler, Mr. Zepp.

Mr Zepp

The problem with this theme is that there’s not a lot of leeway in it. Having taken themes and run them to the extreme to little effect, I hoped that cleaving closer to the archetype might prove to be a better strategy. This is a classic English butler look with morning coat and red vest. The rim-less glasses are right off Angus Hudson’s face on the classic PBS drama Upstairs Downstairs. The bit of watch chain is actually a bit of necklace that’s embedded in my body to give the look.

Close Up

The issue with this outfit is the posing. Whenever there’s something in your hand, walking, standing, and posing becomes a problem. Luckily my Secret Source of Animation work took pity on me and made me some very nice custom poses, including a bent-armed, stiff-backed walk along with some very amusing turns and holds. The silver salver became a serious prop in this routine. The card is even a member of the English House of Lords during the time period that Upstairs, Downstairs was supposed to have been played out in – 1903.

Outcome: Negative

I’m left to assume that I’m just too stupid to play this game. Or maybe the issue is that I’m too subtle. One has to wonder if the judge even knew what I was doing out there. In the post-contest feedback, I was informed that I placed fourth (again) and that the judge was really taken by all the girls in their uniforms — and I suppose that was the rationale. She awarded one skimpy, one historical, and one drudge milkmaid*.

I took advantage of the offer for feedback from the organizer and was told that there wasn’t anything I could do better.

Great.

What would I do differently?

I don’t know. This one was just about perfect.

The custom poses were appropriate to the costume and the theme. The outfit was exact. I can’t think of anything I could have added that would have made me more butler-ish. Even the cranberry vest was within norm. The poses might have been a bit smoother maybe, but I certainly saw worse — and considerably less appropriate ones — on stage tonight.

So, I don’t know. Chalk it up to experience.

At least I got my two votes.

And it was fun planning and plotting to be perfect.

But very disappointing when it didn’t pay off.

* Update: My mistake and looking at the costume in this photo, I have to say it’s much better looking that it looked in the lag fest. I have to give the judge a little more credit this morning than I did in the heat of disappointment last night.

Stuff:

Glasses: Plume – freebie gift at primOptica

Mad Hatters

Wednesday, March 11th, 2009

The noon contest yesterday was Styling Hat Theme. Unfortunately I spent so much time working on Blind Blueberry Zeppelin that it left little time to consider, let alone prepare for, a hat themed outfit. It seemed to me that the issue of a hat based theme is that the hat needs to have some purpose and I needed a hat that was, somehow, part of a larger idea. I needed something like a cowboy hat that could then be supported by a cowboy theme.

But I didn’t really have time to track down anything.

As I was looking through my inventory I remembered an outfit that I’d prepared for the “Showgirl” themed show from a week or so back. I’d gotten it all ready to go, but had a RL conflict at the last minute and was unable to compete. It included a hat and the outfit really was based on the hat.

Glory of the Pharoahs

I created this look by taking an sf Designs Toga and a freebie pair of Roman sandals as a base costume and then adding as much Vegas style accessories as I could think of. I made the “Cobra Crown” from a few gold toned prims and then duplicated and shrunk it to make the armbands. The crown by itself looked really odd when I put it on hair, so I looked up some Egyptian costumes from this period and realized that they had shaved heads and used these kind of fabric surrogates. I made mine in a red color to match the breastplate.

hat_contest2

The poses I put with it were a bit lame and I noticed later that many of them left fingertips inside my clothes or body. There just wasn’t time to adjust them and find new ones so I just concentrated on doing what I could.

The contest itself was a nightmare. My wireless network kept failing, leaving my viewer displaying the view but disconnected from the grid. After several crashes in just a few minutes (including one crash while on stage), I dug out an ethernet cable and plugged my machine into the wall. That stablized my connection long enough to be able to finish the competition.

The result was a satisfying third place.

hats2

One thing I did do for this contest was prepare a good explanatory statement for The Question At The End. I wanted to tie my outfit to the hat and hammer the idea home.

The headgear worn by the Las Vegas dancers has long been a symbol of opulence and fantasy. From the towering tiaras to the feathered headdresses, their hats define them. I’ve chosen to wear this outfit from the “Glory of the Pharoahs” show now playing at the fabulous Luxor Resort and Hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada. We’ll be there through Thursday.

I couldn’t resist the bit of camp at the end.

What would I do differently?

Poses. With more time to prepare, I could have picked better poses. I’m not sure of the utility since I was unlikely to have moved up in the contest even with better poses, but had the judge been more sophisticated in observing, they might have cost me the third place finish.
